Yesterday I went to a really pleasant event. It had lots of nice people, Erica and I took up some case work, there was good food and some reminiscing about old times and old relationships.
The only sad thing was that it was funeral where we all met to ‘see off’ our old friend Pam Devine. As the old saying goes the only one missing was the deceased! The tributes paid to Pam were sincere and said with love and compassion. One of her grandchildren described the movement of Grandma Pam from being the carer to being cared for. Her colleagues from work recalled all that she did in the careers service where she spent most of her working life. She cared deeply about our young people and for most of her times was based in Toxteth. She received an MBE for this in the 70’s.
Erica and I mused over her long service for our Party. Almost 50 years a member of Church Ward and whichever constituency Church Ward happened to be in. Until 2 years ago she was our ward treasurer and passed over the books in apple pie order.
Put simply Pam Devine was a liberal in thought, word and deed. The love which so many people had for her was manifest. Her gathering was a real community event as she had lived off Allerton Road for 50+ years and most of her family live nearby (hence the case work!). She worked in the local Catholic Church as well as the Party and her wisdom was appreciated by all.
At the end of the day that’s all of us can ask for. That when we die people will miss us a little. That we will have achieved something in life for other people. That our family will be able to come together to care for each other in their sadness whilst knowing that we live on in them through the things that we have done together.
It was a privilege to know you Pam. Rest In Peace
