PRES RELEASE ISSUED ON 13/12/12
The Leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition on Liverpool City Council, Cllr Richard Kemp CBE has condemned today’s letter from Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson to the Prime Minister as cynical, scare-mongering and ignorant.
Cllr Kemp says, “By suggesting that government actions will lead to civil unrest the Mayor is actually encouraging civil unrest. No Prime Minister of any Party even has acceded to visits from council leaders in circumstances like this. By pursuing this route of empty threats instead of reasoned argument Mayor Anderson has removed any likelihood of improved treatment for Liverpool both now and in the future.
Instead of adopting this method he should be coming with me next week to meet the senior advisers of the Deputy Prime Minister. I will be taking a report which shows how badly Liverpool is doing by comparison to two other councils. I will be showing facts about the problem and not bluster. He chose not to come to this important meeting within 10 minutes of me making the offer known to him
Mayor Anderson needs to come clean and admit that many of the problems that Liverpool is facing now were caused by a Labour Government spending money that they did not have and using the country’s credit card for cash spending. Now the debts that they created have to be paid off. In the last budget from the Labour Government they were proposing to cut £7 for every £8 cut by the present government. Labour nationally would have had to do most of the things that this government has done.
