Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Local Government, Cllr Richard Kemp, has welcomed the move today by two leading Liberal Democrat peers, Baroness Hamwee and Lord Bradshaw, for Police Commissioners to be piloted in certain areas before it is rolled out nationwide.

Cllr Kemp said: “We have always made our opposition clear over directly elected commissioners, especially as they will be imposed on people without their consent – and see this move to pilot the plans as a very sensible step forward.”

“It should be seen alongside other improvements to the Government’s proposals – such as Police and Crime Panels to hold the Commissioners to account – as another example of Liberal Democrats making a difference to the Police and Crime Bill and we hope it is supported in the Lords”.

“Lib Dems in Local Government will continue to make the case for people to be able to choose, via a referendum, if they want a police and crime commissioner at all, and for further strengthening of powers for Police and Crime Panels”.
