Dolly Parton’s favourite tune might well have been ‘Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?’ but when it comes to luxury cars all you need to do is work for Liverpool City Council. Every tax payer should react with horror to the news that two senior employees of the council both earning well in excess of £120,000 per year are being supported financially by taxpayers to use luxury imported cars (a BMW and an Alfa Romeo together worth about £90,000 new) at taxpayers’ expense.
The two officers now drive a top end BMW and a top end Alfa Romeo provided by YOU. This is a slap in the face for:
- low paid council employees who have had no pay rise for three years;
- tax payers who are paying the bills;
- workers at Jaguar Land Rover who could have provided two locally built luxury cars for less than the cost of one of these imports; and
- the environment as these gas guzzlers are heavily polluting
I have always defended the need to pay our staff properly. I always believe that the job of a public sector manager is often far more complex and onerous than managers in the private sector but I also believe in transparency and openness.
There is no way that taxpayers should foot the bill for cars like these. If a car is needed to get around the city or indeed the conurbation then a small Fiat or Fiesta would foot the bill. If they need a posh car then why not a Jaguar where you could buy two nice cars for half the cost of the imports and help provide local jobs. However for 95% of the time these officers are Municipal Buildings or city centre based. I cannot see that they need a car at all.
It has also been revealed by the Liverpool Echo that the man who broke Liverpool City Council’s finances in the 80’s, Derek Hatton was at a fund raising event for Labour Mayoral candidate Joe Anderson and will be supporting him on May 3rd. Derek Hatton and Militant might seem a blast from the past but it was only 6 years ago that the council finished paying off loans taken out by Labour at massive rates of interest from foreign bankers because no British Bank would lend them the money. Derek’s former mate Tony Mulhearn has now put his name forward for the mayoralty and is talking the same class war twaddle that he did 25 years ago. As former Lib Dem leader Lord Mike Storey said, “It should be no surprise that Degsy is supporting Joe”.
As we have seen recently with an appalling use of public money on ‘party propaganda’ and the continuance of a £750,000 Leader’s fund Labour always forgets that it is taxpayers’ money they are spending and use it as their own cash. Mike is right. It’s the same old Labour Party with the same old contempt for the taxpayer.
